The Decisions That Actually Lower Your Score

September 15, 2026 · 5 min read · By Deb Spair

Most golfers I meet believe their swing is what stands between them and a better score. Often it is their decisions. Here are three changes you can make on your very next round.

1. Aim for the fat part of the green

Unless you are holding a wedge, a tucked pin is not your target. Aim for the center of the green and let a good shot drift toward the flag. Your average leave will be shorter and your misses far kinder.

2. Take one more club

Most amateurs come up short far more often than long. Choose the club that gets you to the back of the green with your normal swing, not your best swing.

3. Take your medicine

When you are in trouble, the hero shot through the trees rarely pays off. Get back to the fairway, take a bogey at worst, and move on. Avoiding one double bogey a round adds up fast.

These are exactly the skills we work on in the Swing Into Success On Course Clinic: club choice, targets, and what to do when the shot is not perfect.
